“Court Failures”, a look at Joana’s life

The play that premiered last year, on the occasion of the celebrations of the 600th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Aveiro Cathedral, by the Start-Teatro company, and which completely sold out the Cine-Teatro de Estarreja, is now coming to the city of Aveiro. On Saturday and Sunday, at 9.30 pm and 5 pm, respectively, the play will take to the stage at Estaleiro Teatral, this being the third time that the play will be presented to the public since the original (in old Tuscan) was discovered by the director of the Aveiro Museum – Santa Joana, António Rebocho Christo. Translated, at the request of the Diocesan Commission for Culture | Aveiro, by Father Franclim, the play was published by Tempo Novo and performed for the first time at the Auditorium of the Aveiro Seminary in 2017. This show tells the story of Princess Joan of Portugal, heir to the throne, who defied the expectations of the Court and the people by choosing a religious life instead of marriage to the Dauphin of France. A lady of great wealth and beauty, Joan preferred penance to jewels and her deep devotion led her to renounce power and wealth to follow her vocation in the convent of Aveiro, despite countless pressures from her family and her suitor. We thus witness a “failing Court”, as it fails to captivate the Princess or overcome divine designs.
Creative freedom The play “Fracassos da Corte” (Court Failures) takes place among princesses and kings, fools and suitors, courtesans and confidants, with an inspiring story about faith, courage and the search for happiness. In this regard, Cláudia Stattmiller, director and playwright, highlighted the fact that the Diocese, when commissioning her, “gave me carte blanche to create the drama, given that this is a serious and even sensitive subject”, which left her very flattered, “they gave me creative freedom and a great vote of confidence”.
With 12 actors, the play is suitable for ages eight and up, lasts just over an hour and is already on sale. Regarding expectations, Cláudia Stattmiller says it is a fun play, with many comical and light-hearted moments, but based on an important part of Aveiro's history, adding that this should be the last opportunity to see “Fracassos da Corte”. Regarding the play's text, she explained that it dates back to the 16th century and was written by the Dominican friar Giovanni Maria Muti, in Italy. He wrote several plays, mainly on religious themes and this, which is considered his most important work, was about the life of Princess Joana of Portugal, offering a unique perspective on religiosity and the social conflicts of the time.
